Summer 2024 Update: July 11th Bond Projects Update + New Spartans Introductions
supt

Spartan families and staff,

I have always been a big fan of Bill Watterson’s cartoon strip, Calvin & Hobbes. Bill’s clever wit resonates with me even more today as I have several grandkids the same age as Calvin. I’m also sure many of us can relate to Calvin’s concern that summer is moving too quickly and that we have much to accomplish in the next 40 days before returning to school.

I hope it has been a relaxing and joyful summer break for you and your families. As we savor these warm, sunny days, the district is already busy anticipating and preparing for the upcoming school year. Accordingly, we plan to share several updates over the remainder of the summer to keep you informed of any new changes and progress on existing initiatives.

Building an Extraordinary Future Together

As you have likely noticed, multiple construction projects and maintenance upgrades are happening across the district this summer. As of today, the ongoing capital projects represent an investment of nearly $100M for our community.  They signify the district’s positive growth and commitment to providing our students and staff with the best possible environments to work and learn.

The new high school academic building - scheduled for a January 2025 opening - is evidence of our commitment to providing modern and well-resourced learning spaces for our students. Over the summer, most of the work is moving to the inside of the building as we complete the exterior features and begin the final phase of the civil work. This work includes a new parking lot west of Riverview, a new bus loop, extensive landscaping, the creation of outdoor learning spaces, and restored student parking east of the stadium. It will be a fantastic facility for our students and teachers, and we’re so grateful for your support of this transformative project for BPS.

As I often say at public events, we are “building an extraordinary future together.” Your support and investment in our district's vision for students is deeply appreciated. As more families move into our wonderful community, we want them to be proud of the excellent schools and facilities we have built for the children of Bixby. Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Just north of the stadium, the renovation of the Home of the Spartans (HOTS) athletic building is continuing, with a projected completion in September. The new BPS Administration and Enrollment Center is a little farther north and should be ready for us to occupy in October. On Mingo, just east of our existing transportation facility, our new maintenance warehouse should be completed by August. A new East Intermediate gymnasium will be open for students by early October; about the same time we break ground on a new gym and dance facility on the Ninth Grade campus.

New Administrators

I also want to inform you of several changes in our leadership team. First, Assistant Superintendent Jamie Milligan has moved to be an Executive Director at Tulsa Tech, effective July 1st. Kendall Still, a former administrator with OKC and Norman Schools, will move into this role. Daniel Deitz has accepted a position as our new district HR Director. Wes Coleman will assume Daniel’s duties at Brassfield Alternative School and manage his current responsibilities as our virtual academy coordinator. These changes bring new perspectives and experiences to our team, and we are confident that they will contribute to the continued success of our district.

At the site level, Jeremy Tew is moving from Jenks to Assistant Principal (AP) at the 9th Grade Center. Kellan Haffner is also coming to Bixby from Jenks and will join Dinah Benavides as an AP next year. Middle School STEAM teacher Traeton Dansby has been elevated to an AP position at the middle school, replacing Denise Maguire. We’re excited to welcome these new leaders to Bixby.

New Students

Our enrollment office has remained busy over the summer.  More people are choosing to move to Bixby and raise their families. While we still have several weeks before developing final schedules for students and teachers, we project the district will have close to 8,400 students to begin the 2024-2025 school year.

This represents an approximate growth of 38% in student enrollment just over the past six years. The largest classes in the system are next year’s sophomore and seventh-grade classes, with 631 and 654 students, respectively.
