Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great honor and gratitude that I am able to write to you and introduce myself as the principal of Bixby 9th Grade Center. My name is Curtis Whiteley and I am humbled and excited to be able to serve the staff, students, and families of Bixby. This year will mark my 14th year in Oklahoma public education and my second year here at Bixby schools. As a lifelong Bixby resident and Spartan alum, coming back home to serve the community of Bixby has been an incredible experience.

I am excited to extend a warm welcome to all of the parents and guardians of our incoming 9th grade students. We know that this is a significant milestone for both students and families, and we are committed to making this transition as smooth and successful as possible. Our goal is to offer your student a well-rounded education within a safe and welcoming environment that promotes critical thinking, creativity, curiosity, ownership of learning, problem-solving, and global citizenship. Beyond the core subjects, we provide a wide range of electives and extracurricular activities designed to cater to each student’s unique interests and talents. Our aim is to offer diverse opportunities for your child to explore their passions and develop new skills.

My fundamental belief and motto in education is straightforward, “do what is best for kids to prepare them for life, whether that be college or career.” I believe that every student holds great potential, and it is our mission to help ignite the potential of every student. Our time with them is brief, making it essential to remember that every day is an opportunity to positively impact their lives and add value. This is especially crucial in today’s rapidly changing educational and technological landscape. Achieving this requires a collaborative approach, a servant’s heart, and a genuine love for people. Therefore, we encourage open communication between parents, teachers, and administrators. The best way to maximize support for students is through a partnership among the key stakeholders in each student’s life — parents, guardians, teachers, and staff — working together to provide what is best for each student. If you have any questions or concerns at any point, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Sincerely,
Curtis Whiteley

Important Reminders

We would like to remind you of a few important guidelines for the upcoming school year. As you may recall, the Bixby School District will be prohibiting the use of cell phones and other communication devices through ninth grade during the instructional school day. While students may carry their phones in purses or backpacks, the devices must be turned off and kept out of sight. This policy also applies to smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, and all other personal wireless devices. If a student is caught using or displaying their cell phone during the instructional day (defined as the time from their arrival at school until the end of the school day), they will be required to hand over the device to be secured in the 9GC main office. The intent of this policy is to reduce distractions, thereby enhancing students' learning and academic success, and to alleviate the stress and anxiety that can arise from the constant need to check messages and notifications. Please see here for Superintendent Miller’s summer newsletter that addressed this topic earlier this summer on July 18.

We also want to remind you of our school’s dress policy. We understand that clothing styles vary, but we want to emphasize and ask for your help in ensuring your child comes to school within the dress code. Please see here for our board policy on dress code. Students deemed out of the dress code will be asked to change and will not be allowed to return to class until they are within the dress code. We want to minimize the disruption this may cause to your child's school day. Examples of common attire that is not within the dress code include:

Midriffs exposing the stomach.

Muscle shirts (tank tops), sleeveless shirts.

Shorts/dresses that are shorter where the end of a person’s fingers meet when the person has their arms down at their side.

Backless shirts/tops.

Clothing that advertises, displays, or promotes tobacco, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or dangerous weapons, or inappropriate language such as curse words.

Shoes must be worn at all times.

Hoodies are permitted, but the hood part must not cover the head or ears while in the building.

Please let us know if you have any questions. Together, we can partner to support students as we strive to provide the best learning environment.
